Hawks Family Reunion

The day after Chris's white coat ceremony (I'll post about that later...) we left for California for our Hawks family reunion.  We went to Twain Harte where Chris's grandma lives- it's a tiny little mountain resort town and it was beautiful.  It was so nice to get away from the sweltering Houston heat and humidity.  The best part of the trip was watching Nathan play with his cousins- he loves them!

Here he is with his cousin Emmett, just 4 months younger.

Isn't he just the cutest little kid!!!

There is a lake in town that we went to twice- our first attempt was horrible, almost all the kids were having huge breakdowns, including Nathan (who had been bit by some nasty bugs and was having some weird allergic reactions...poor kid!)

This was how this trip to the lake felt...for all of us

The only thing that would console the poor boy was ice cream, and once it was gone he was real sad again, so that's when we called it quits.

Another day Chris, Nathan and I went up to Pine Crest Lake and let Nathan run all over...the kid loved it! He had so much fun chasing birds...

and playing in the dirt!

It was so beautiful up there, we had fun walking around the Lake and enjoying the gorgeous weather.

Nathan's favorite part was when we let him go in the water and throw rocks.  We probably did this for about 20 minutes.  He got completely soaked (and we had no change of clothes) but he loved it.

After going to the lake we went up to a little convenience store and got some ice cream! (and yes, Nathan ran around the store in only a diaper and sandals!)

On my birthday (24!!!) the whole family went up to Calaveras Big Trees State Park- it was really amazing to see the trees...they really are big! Nathan had so much fun throwing pine cones with his cousin Scott.

He's so cute!

a big tree

Nathan and Scott are best buds now :)

another big tree :)

All the boy cousins with the grandparents

After we ate lunch and the boys entertained themselves by throwing rocks (Nathan is really good at throwing...he loves to throw anything and is actually really accurate)

Later that night all the Hawks kids went miniature golfing- it was a lot of fun :)

and Chris had some wild moves :)

I however am not very good.

We tried the lake one more time before we left- this experience was much better.  No more screaming babies, no more allergic reactions, and I actually swam in the freezing cold mountain lake.

Nathan definitely had more fun this time throwing his ball and playing in the sand.

On our last full day there Chris and I went to Yosemite with Dave and Jessica (we left the little guys at home) and had fun hiking.  We didn't have a ton of time to spend, so we asked a park ranger about what hikes would be best for us (not too long, not too strenuous...) so she recommended 3 separate hikes to 3 waterfalls.  The first was easy, it took about 20 minutes total to go up and back...no problem.  The next was slightly different- the first part of the hike was really steep and I was thinking "wow, this is a bit more strenuous then I thought...), the last part of the hike is so steep you literally are using your hands to get up the mountain...good thing it was absolutely beautiful.

Since our "easy" 3 mile hike took a lot more time then we thought it would, it was time to go home.  We took some pictures with Half-Dome and headed back to Twain Harte.

We had so much fun on our vacation.  It was a great beginning to our month off.  We loved seeing family and Chris loved reminiscing about his childhood summers spent up in the mountains.  We were glad we were able to make it!

and stay tuned for posts about our Alaskan adventure!!!!
