Sadly, in the almost 1 full year we've lived here, this was our first time really going downtown (Houston kind of has 2 main areas, the medical center/museum district and downtown...we are big fans of the med center and museums but downtown has not been high on our list---until July when we are going to see WICKED!!!) We took the metro up which Nathan liked- staring out the windows is apparently a blast, and we were glad to save all the money (and getting lost) if we had driven and parked.
It was a little warm, but considering it could have been so much hotter we were happy with the weather. We lathered Nathan up in sunscreen (and Chris too, we're not taking any chances with these two white boys), which soon (even though I was super careful) ran into his eyes when he started to sweat...so for the first hour Nathan was not a happy camper...poor kid.
We had fun walking around, seeing new things (lots of naked African art...some were a little excessive), people watching, and enjoying spending the afternoon together.
We went to Jamaica
Had fun playing on a ship
They also had a slave prison/fort with skeletons and torture devices hanging...we did not take Nathan there.
We did however take Nathan to see Gandhi
My favorite part of the day was when we walked past one Christian Booth...Chris had a chance to "Shoot Satan and win a prize"
at first, Chris was losing to Satan, but don't worry, Chris finally shot Satan and won the prize- a sweet pencil...nothing says "congrats, you've conquered Satan" like a pencil.
We also learned some valuable lessons from the balloon they gave Nathan
Nathan favorite part of the day was playing...he took the chance to get out and run around...
fall over...
play with sticks...
and make some new friends
His other favorite part was drinking the frozen lemonade- it was the only thing that would cure the sadness from his sore little sun-screened eyes.
We ended up having a great time.
Chris was bummed that we hadn't eaten a funnel cake (remember how his first time eating one was at the rodeo? Now he's a big fan....) So on our way home I promised him that I would make funnel cake someday. As we were getting Nathan ready for bed I looked up a recipe and it turns out they are probably the easiest and cheapest thing to make, so we made funnel cake...and it was better than the one we ate at the rodeo (cause it cost about $3 less!)
what a great way to end a great day- we'll definitely be going to the festival next year, and making funnel cake even sooner!

Chris, way to conquer Satan. I always knew you had it in you. Sarah, we think you're awesome for making funnel cake. What's the recipe? Nathan, way to make new friends!

so fun! Houston has soooo many cool things to do- I feel like I've barely tapped into all the cool things in this city :)
Looks/sounds like an awesome day, minus the sunscreen in the eyes -- that is the worst! I swear it doesn't matter how careful you are!
Super fun day!! There is so much to see and do around here--I am way jealous you get to see WICKED!! I also need your recipe for the funnel cake!!
Wow - sounds like you had some good times in downtown Houston...
Cool, local festivals are what I miss most about living in Whatcom County and Bellingham. Snohomish County just doesn't have such things. The simple, folksy kinds are the best.
Hmmm...Sister Hawks has never made me funnel cakes. Since she's on her weird diet plan to "dump the plump" I prety much have to cook my own food if I want to eat well. That's okay though because I learned to cook in Scouts...
