We decided to get crazy this year and drive to my parent's house for Christmas. 1400 miles with 3 kids sounded like so much fun we decided to make it more interesting by driving the whole way in 1 day.
We left Saturday the 22nd right before lunch time. After a quick stop to find Nathan's baseball he left at his game we were off! Thanks to food, books and a heaven sent DVD player we did quite well.
We got stuck in a huge traffic accident just outside of Baton Rouge but that allowed us to stop at a super nice Chick fil A where the kids got out all their energy (and we met a nice Mormon family...turns out modest clothing and a plethora of small children seems to signal to everyone that you're Mormon).
Then we began the long and tiring all-night drive. Chris took the first shift while I epically failed at taking a good nap. At 1:00 I took over and struggled the whole way through Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, and into Tennessee (it makes me sound like I drove so far, but we probably spent about 20 minutes in Georgia) till Chris took over again at 4. Thankfully the *NSync station on Pandora kept me rocking out to every song I can remember from Middle School. Our kids slept till 7 (longer than at home!) and then took another nap around 10:00 with Chris- perfect! With a few bathroom breaks they did amazing, and really enjoyed putting their bowls of breakfast on their heads...
We let the kids get out and run around in the morning before we drove the last few hours. Nathan and I even had a race around the rest stop- we got some crazy looks but what ever it takes to keep the kids happy...
We got to my parent's house just before 1 and we were exhausted. Thankfully there were plenty of toys and people for the kids to play with! I think the hardest part of the trip was knowing that in week and a half we'd have to do it all over again...
