Abby's ER Trip

Earlier last week Abby started breathing a little funny, and we began to think that she was getting croup again.  Tuesday evening I noticed her breathing was getting worse and I was really glad I had scheduled an appointment with her doctor in the morning.  Chris assured me that as of right then she was fine and there wasn't much we could do unless it got worse.

So that morning at 4:30 we wake up to hear Abby calling for us.  Chris rushed in her room and pulled her out.  I went to find them and Chris said she needed to go to the ER immediately- she needed help breathing now.  It was scary to see her not breathing and struggling.  They were immediately seen, no long ER wait when you're not breathing! And they started her on some breathing treatments pretty quickly.  After the first treatment didn't work well enough they had to do another one, which made them decide that they needed to admit her.
she didn't like the treatments at all

finally sleeping after a long night and early morning

I dropped Nathan and Elise off with some friends and met Abby and Chris at the hospital. Unfortunately my phone was in the bag that Chris brought with him to the hospital.  So he was there with both phones and poor reception.  It was hard to coordinate where to bring the kids with no phone!
I brought Abby's favorite snack- strawberries!
After finally finding a room and receiving a blessing Chris went to back to work since he was really needed there and I stayed with Abby.  The doctors ordered another round of breathing treatments but the respiratory therapist decided she didn't need it. I disagreed, but didn't fight it because what do i know? Turns out I'm apparently a genius...
happy to be in her "big room"
nap time

Around 4:30 she was doing so much better and was finally discharged.  I was a bit confused because one nurse said the goal was to get her breathing completely normal while at rest, and when they sent us home she still wasn't doing that all the time.
she was not happy when they woke her up when it was time to leave

The next morning I took her in to her doctor (who came to see her at the hospital) and she didn't agree with her being discharged when she was, so we got steroids to last a few more nights.  Thankfully she's responded very well to the extra doses and is almost breathing completely normal all the time.  She still coughs a lot when she sleeps and has some weird breathing sounds when she's crying, but other than that she's doing great.  She's been sleeping in our room (so we can easily hear her breathe) with a humidifier right by her face and I think that's helped a lot.
We're so glad we live so close to a hospital and that Chris is knowledgeable enough to know when to deal with an issue on our own or when to get more help- it is so nice to have someone who knows what's going on.  We're grateful Abby is doing better and hope she grows out getting croup soon!

Oh poor Abby! We just had a very similar incident with Benson two weeks ago, but instead of croup he has really bad asthma! So scary when they can't breath, I'm so glad she is doing better, and hope you can get things figured out! Those steroids, you gotta love them and hate them, love them cause they help so much! and hate them cause they make your kids go nuts! at least in Benson's case he was bouncing off the walls!

NO fun! Croup is so scary...is that what they decided it was? Hope Abby doesn't have any more relapses with that. She's still a cutie even when she doesn't feel good, though.
