Mother's Day 2012 - better than last year!

Since last year's Mother's Day was pretty bad we determined that it would be hard for this to be too much worse; it definitely wasn't...but it wasn't that far off...

We started off our Mother's Day weekend with a trip to the Houston Temple as a family.  Nathan has been excited all week that he got to go this time too.  Chris and I switched going into the temple and watching the kids.

They had a lot of fun playing in the fountains...

did I mention they loved the fountains? Cause pretty sure they spent way too much time playing in the water.

We looked at flowers and bugs, played with pine cones and ate snacks.  We love the temple!

Then Chris came out and I got to go in.  They spent a lot of time telling Abby not to pick "Jesus's flowers" and reading books (and pulling books out of the fountain...) and going on little walks.

We then came home, everyone took naps- glorious!- and then Chris surprised me by going out for a pre-Mother's Day dinner to arguably my favorite restaurant here in Houston- Chuys! (Everyone should go and get the Chuychanga with deluxe tomatillo sauce...sooo good!) We had a great time as a family- our kids were practically perfect the whole time...Happy Mother's Day to me!

When we got home things started to take a turn for the worse, Abby was having some breathing issues starting on Friday and we were worried, but not too worried.  Saturday she was doing better, we thought, but by Saturday night things were not so good.  I was really starting to get worried now (why do kids always get really sick on nights and weekends?) Our friend came over super late at night and helped give her a blessing, after which Chris spent about about an hour trying to get her back to sleep- thankfully she was breathing a bit better- while I made the overnight french toast Chris had planned and started to make for me and then tres leches cake for my mother's day dessert.

Abby had a rough night.  I got about 3 hours of sleep and Chris got less than 5...good enough right? The French toast was excellent (minus Nathan having some seriously frustrating eating issues, but that's a whole other post later about that problem).  We got ready for church and Nathan and I headed out while Chris stayed home for a bit getting Abby ready (who seemed much improved by the way...wahoo!)

Church was good, all the women got roses and candy (Nathan picked me out some reeses peanut butter cups...delicious!) And things seemed to be going rather well.  I thought I had 2 meetings after church but I only ended up having one shorter one...sweet!

We got the kids lunch and put them to bed planning on taking a big nap ourselves again...only Abby decided she only needed about 45 minutes of sleep before really struggling to breathe, it took about 30 minutes to calm her down and getting her back to sleep then Nathan was up 20 minutes later...oh well.

Thankfully Chris was still able to get nap (he drives a kid to seminary Monday mornings and has super early surgeries plus a really long day, so anticipating another really bad night with Abby I thought it best for his career's sake that he try and get some sleep so he wouldn't kill anyone on the operating table even though it was Mother's Day...I've sort of become of fan of getting a pay check these last few months...) So I played with the kids instead and they were surprisingly really happy so it was good.

Chris took the kids on a walk while I made dinner.  Now I know that for most people the mom doesn't makes dinner on Mother's Day, but here's my thing....I would much rather cook the food than watch the kids :) So that's how we roll in this house and I like it- it works for us.

They did however enjoy eating the "special frosting" I made for the cake before they left- whipped cream is delicious:)

The food was so good- not to brag too much :) The only downside to dinner was that when Chris got back from the walk Abby didn't look so good. Her fever was back and she was breathing weird...we gave her some medicine and ate dinner.  She didn't eat much so we knew she really must be sick...because boy can that girl eat. We again had issues with Nathan eating food.  We then threw the kids in the tub (Abby was all sweaty from the fever and dirty from dinner), skyped with my family, and got Abby to bed.

We then ate our delicious cake and put Nathan to bed.  What a long day. We called Chris's mom and then headed to bed, mentally prepping ourselves for a rough night and a long week (Chris has work 6 very busy days this week...lame).

So not a perfect day but certainly not as bad as last year! Maybe next year all our kids will be healthy and sleep? Probably not.

I am however so grateful to be a mother- even though my kids sometimes drive me insane they are also the best, most wonderful, sweet, adorable, loving, spunky, funny, amazing kids.  I love them so much and I love being their mother.  While the days may get crazy and I get frazzled and frustrated there is nothing else in the world I would rather be doing than this- it's hard but definitely worth it.  I love you Nathan, Abby, and Baby! Thank you Chris for being a great dad and husband- I definitely can't imagine doing any of this without you- I love you.

And thanks Mom for putting up with all of us kids and loving us even though we must have driven you completely insane too- everyday I'm learning more and more how amazing and saintlike you truly are.  Thank you for teaching me how to be a mother.  I'm so grateful that you are my mom- I love you! Happy Mother's Day!
