Camping

Easter weekend we headed up to Huntsville State Park with some friends for a night of camping.  Our kids were beyond excited...as normally I spend little time outdoors in the evening- the Houston mosquitoes are awful!

It's truly amazing how much junk we needed for just 24 hours...

While I set up the tent the kids were busy finding the bazillion caterpillars around our camp site...

and making Chris chase after them on their bikes.

After our friends showed up (and an extremely unsuccessful attempt to have Elise take a nap) the kids practiced using their fishing rods and then we headed to the lake.

Nate was disappointed they didn't catch any fish, but he seemed pretty content with catching a piece of grass, so it was successful!

Finally around 5:30 Elise crashed- poor girl was dead tired- which meant she got to stay up late and eat smores! A must for every camping trip.

After smores we took the kids on a walk- I forgot how excited staying up late is when you're a kid! They were so excited to go and look for stars.

After seeing a bunny and some weird bugs the kids were in heaven. Perfect ending to our first day.

The next day started off with the kids warming up by the fire. Our little city kids were way to excited by fire...

We rented a canoe and took turns going on it with the kids.  While the other kids were riding we walked on the beach

And while Nate and Abby went on the boat with Chris I took Elise to the park.

Because it turns out she doesn't really like canoeing...

We did a little bit more fishing which made Nate ridiculously happy (he still asks about 2-3 times a week to go fishing again)

And we stopped by the little nature center which, although very small, the kids loved.

Elise was particularly drawn to the toy squirrel they had an wouldn't let it go, which produced some tears when we finally had to pry it out of her hands to leave.

And by the dirt, cuts, and bruises it was obviously a successful camping trip!
